What To See & Do
Our Galleries
Our extensive collection of Atlantic salmon memorabilia is housed in three separate galleries, one on the main floor and two on our lower level.
Our newest exhibit, “The Golden Age of Salmon Fishing on the Miramichi,” illustrates the growing interest in recreational salmon fishing which began in earnest during the late 1890s.
The influx of anglers from both Upper Canada and the United States had a significant impact on the local economy and made the Miramichi River world famous for its salmon fishing potential.
The display highlights many of the old-time fishing lodges and the outfitters and guides who made fishing on the Miramichi a truly memorable experience.
This is an “evolving” exhibit and we encourage anyone with a personal connection to the camps or with the people who worked for them to loan us their personal artefacts for display.
In 2017, the Salmon Museum was delighted to receive a collection valued at approximately $500,000 from the family of the late John Keith-King. Scattered throughout both our upper and lower floors, you’ll see various pieces of artwork, rods, reels and, in particular, fly plates containing the work of distinguished fly tyers from all over the world assembled by William Cushner.
Also of interest is our Hall of Fame display on the lower level showcasing the over 200 individuals we’ve had the honour of inducting since 1983. And throughout the galleries are displays celebrating the achievements of talented anglers and fly tyers (many of whom are members of our Hall of Fame).
Don’t forget to check out our Reading Room on the lower level. Filled with a large variety of books on the art of salmon fishing and furnished with a comfortable armchair, this little library offers visitors the opportunity to “take a break” and read what the masters have to say about how best to pursue the elusive salmo salar.
